He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me."— Matthew, Ch 8, Vv 2–5
In the morning, promptly, work experience girl Maggie Ryan (Magarial) turns up to help out Dr Blakely. The two of them go visiting the Weaver household as previously arranged, in the company of DS Martins. Martins is disinclined to drive, so picks on a constable at random — young PC Wells is unamused to find himself in the driver's seat.
Debra Weaver welcomes them in, Tom being out of town again on business. She ushers Blakely and his bag of forensic tricks into Jane's bedroom (which has been left pretty much untouched) and sets Jennifer to making tea. She turns out to be a sharp and rather unsympathetic woman, though this may of course just be her way of hiding grief. She answers questions from DS Martins while Magariel and PC Wells sit in the kitchen (safely out of the way) with Jennifer. Magariel uses her attunement again on the tea, and determines that Jennifer is human; a quick raid on the fridge, nominally for milk, reveals no left-over food or pre-made pies, so she can't pull the same trick on Mrs Weaver.
Blakely's investigations into Jane's room are, as expected, fruitless. She appears to have been a perfectly normal late teen, with the usual pop posters on her walls. There is nothing to suggest why she would have been killed, or any sign of demonic interference at all for that matter.
Jennifer is still clearly upset about her sister's death, so Magariel makes sympathetic noises, as one girl to another, Wells being clearly out of his depth here. Eventually they fall to girl talk, shooing Wells out of there entirely. Jenny asks Magariel's advice about boyfriends; you see, she's got two of them, and she really likes them both, and they get on well now — Dave was really jealous of Zack at first — and she doesn't want to spoil it. Magariel offers what advice she can, and notices that Jenny gets very vague when asked how she knows the boys.
Elsewhere, Atoziel gets cracking on his search through Somerset House and elsewhere for records of the Beverly Road gang, tracing the Weavers through several house moves — they move a lot — and finding the Woods' birth certificates. He is intrigued to find not a single record for Zachary Philpotts. Dearie me, do we have a celestial here?
Also in the morning, Boriel gets a phone call from Amanda Wood. Her TV has gone on the blink again, so soon after he last repaired it, and would he come out and fix it again. An appointment is made for the afternoon, and Mrs Wood doesn't mind if Boriel brings along a trainee, does she?
Meanwhile, back at the lab, it's lunchtime for Excel and Andrew McKenzie. McKenzie nips out to the local sandwich bar, while Excel takes the opportunity to bug his phone. He doesn't quite get enough time to sneak upstairs and bug the phone in McKenzie's flat, mostly due to his lockpicks getting tangled up.
Magariel switches back to his male vessel for the afternoon, to act as Boriel's assistant, and the two angels go to "repair" the Woods' TV. Boriel does the repair work, quietly using Remote Control to reset the tunings that he scrambled last night, while Magariel nominally watches him but actually observes the house and its occupants. His practised Creationer's eyes and attunements tell him quickly that this is not a well off house — the cushions, for instance, have been made by a somewhat competent human saving money. Amanda, he presumes, and not being blind as a Malakite he picks up the tell-tale signs that she fancies Boriel something rotten. David, meanwhile is watching Boriel with some enthusiasm; he is doing Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A-level, and the TV repair fascinates him. Magariel resonates on him, determining that he is being watched by his mother, and in a more generic sense by Alex/Hezekiah.
In the evening, Magariel and Atoziel make their separate ways to Giuseppe's, Magariel having switched to her female vessel again. Alex is there, as also is PC Wells (out of uniform, but still sticking out like a sore thumb).
