Session 8: Old Friends and New

In what distant deeps or skies
Burned the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

— Tiger! Tiger!, William Blake

Wednesday 21st December, 1994

Tracking the previous location of his attuned, Magariel went out into the Far Marches together with Atoziel and a Malakite of Dreams named Phanuel. Eventually they find themselves wandering in a sandy desert under the stars, but still able to see perfectly well as if by moonlight. With David back on the Corporeal Plane, the group just wander about and explore hopefully. After a while they notice that they are being excluded from one area; as they head towards it, they find themselves leaving in a different direction.

With nothing better to do, Atoziel opens conversation by yelling out in the general direction of the exclusion zone. Somewhat to his surprise he gets an answer as a security camera appears from under the sand. Long conversation leaves the angels with the impression that the guy they are talking to is extremely paranoid, has no strong celestial associations, hasn't been worshipped for a long time, and is still quite strong — logically he (the voice was male, but there's no guarantee it's the real voice) would have been of deity level. The angels are persistent in questioning him about Zack, so are told that he will be a help, and to treat him as mortal for all practical purposes. Yes, he could have been responsible for the Disturbance at Jennifer's house. No, Zack doesn't know, and the ethereal would deeply appreciate the angels not telling him that he isn't human. Apparently the ethereal lets David and other kids (including Jennifer) come and hang out in his domain, but he is responsible for the transport. He is extremely concerned to learn that David has the attentions of a Djinn, and promises to do what it can to help.

After swapping travel tips with Atoziel, the ethereal directs the angels to a platform from which they can be sent back to the Vale. This is technomagical according to Magariel, and is in effect a relic powering a souped-up Celestial Song of Motion, which does indeed bring the characters to the edge of the Vale, saving them many hours of walking through the dangerous Marches. The three angels agree not to spread the news that they've acquired too far, and in particular not to tell Blakely (a servitor of Laurence) about any ethereal involvement.

During the day, Excel has another go at breaking into Andrew McKenzie's flat and again gets his lockpicks stuck. Atoziel also digs into Giuseppe's, finding the building plans lodged with the council, and also that Giuseppe himself lives on the site, as do five women; Vanessa Fairbourn, Helen Williams, Mary Green, Joanna Jennings and Coral Wilson. It is generally agreed that the angels will do something about the club as soon as possible, probably tonight. This makes Helophel very happy — she had been so bored as to take up learning the tuba in the mean time.
