Session 8: Real to Riel

To be conscious that you are ignorant is a great step to knowledge.

— Benjamin Disraeli

Friday 6th January 1995

While Atoziel spends a little time getting the details of Debra Weaver's itinerary so that Magariel will know when to expect her back (in about a week's time, it appears), Blakely calls the angels together for a conference. They meet on a heath which is suitably deserted at 3 a.m. and share information. The stills from the CCTV tape are particularly interesting, since Blakely can positively identify the caucasian woman as WPC Melanie Herald. There is an inconclusive discussion as to exactly what is going on and what to do about it, and the angels separate after Blakely suggests things to follow up.

Atoziel decides that his first job is to try to get more information on the bizarre Disturbance he heard associated with the white fire. He ascends to Heaven and starts poking about in the Library. After a while he is directed to Riel, a high-ranking angel whose work is in cataloging and recording the sounds of the Symphony, so much so that he is unofficially refered to as "The Recording Angel." The two spend some hours in conversation, mostly conducted in song to better transfer the nuances of Disturbance that Atoziel is trying to identify. Riel has not come across such a Disturbance before, and brings out some fascinating celestial recording equipment so that he can carry on researching.

Boriel slips back to the hospital, and using Ethereal Form again slips a bug into the Burns Unit. It's actually relying on vibrations from the window, to minimise the chances of being spotted, but that does limit its sensitivity and clarity. He then goes home to review the bug recordings that he has from Beverly Road.

Magariel catches a lift with Blakely to Blackheath, after Boriel's bugs reassure her that all is still quiet at the Weaver household. She checks in with the Seneschal, who lets her know that the Dagger-baited trap that she suggested has been put into operation, but hasn't had any great success. She also offers her services if any Windies in the area need a hand, having decent disguise skills and the Celestial Song of Motion. The offer is appreciated, though no jobs instantly occur to the Seneschal. There being nothing much going on, Magariel goes home and plays with the laptop and internet connection that Boriel brought along to do some serious arguing in a chat room, thereby fulfilling her new Rite from Janus; spend an hour changing someone's mind. Then dawn arrives, and she gets another hour's arguing in before going in to work.

Blakely merely spends some time maintaining his role, pretending to sleep. Helophel does much the same, largely through lack of anything else to do.

In the morning, Magariel joins Blakely at the police station for more "work experience." This also allows here to examine the manacles that had been used to suspend Wells. These are not artifacts, in fact they seem to be London manufactured as replica Dungeon-style manacles for display purposes. Maggie declares this to be dull.

Excel and the McKenzies eventually arrive to give their statements formally, and afterwards are prevailed to take investigators down the sewers. The investigators are Blakely, Magariel, PC Richard McClennan and two other uniforms, who are duly kitted out for sewer crawling and sent off.
