A Word of Advice

For Pat Silver -- who else?!
It was just after midnight when the fans began to shout,
"Curse the Devil below but there's a filk about!
There are folders on the stairway and guitars around the hall,
And hordes of neofans who cannot sing at all."
"What can I do?" said a neo, "I would like to sing a song
For it is my own invention, forty verses long.
Just a slot in the circle would be very very nice."
Then an old fan came up and gave him this advice.
"You can just stand and sing it if you're only here for fun,
But if you want recognition then you've scarce begun.
You must pick on a filker who does your sort of thing
And there's one you can pick on if you want to sing.
"Sing it fast, sing it slow, sing it anyway you know.
If it's wrong there's only one way to take care of that.
You must practise til you're blue, singing high and singing true
And if it's neither sharp nor flat then you can sing like Pat!
"There is Chris on the twelve-string and there's Talis on the mandolin
And Dave upon the classical which takes a lot of handling,
There's Adam on the keyboards and there's Mike upon guitar,
Just pick one to imitate and you'll go far."
So the neo started practising and soon was very busy,
For he worked up a guitar part that would make the filkers dizzy
And he practised his singing trying this way and that
Til everyone agreed that he could sing like Pat.
Sing it...
Sing it...
