Rhodri's Home Page

Photo of Rhodri Being the home page of Rhodri James, who has for arcane reasons become known as a wildebeeste herder. Since I have never been nearer to a gnu than Jersey Zoo, some people might find this idea rather strange. If you really must know, follow the link.

(If all you want is to find out what I've changed recently, look here.)

So what is there to say about myself? I'm a 35 year old computer consultant and musician living in Cambridge (UK, for those who haven't read the URL properly yet). I putter around on RISC OS (formerly Acorn) computers for preference, since those tend to do what I want rather than something almost, but not quite, totally unlike what I wanted them to do. Outside work, I am a Liberal Democrat City Councillor for Arbury Ward in Cambridge, an active member of the South Arbury Residents Association, a committee member of the North Cambridge Credit Union, a member of the PCC for my local church, a member of the Cambridge Deanery Synod and a regular helper with the LiveWires Scripture Union holiday.

For relaxation I like to read (and occasionally write) Science Fiction and Fantasy, and am an active member of SF fandom. I've done my time writing and editing fanzines, but I don't seem to have the time to do it any more. Shame, really. Anyway, such little as I've managed that isn't complete rubbish (i.e. it's incomplete rubbish) is getting slipped into the website here piece by piece.

One of my particular failings at the moment is being UK treasurer of Logres Weyr, one of the many writing groups dedicated to Anne McCaffrey's Pern books. On the other hand, given that the Weyrleader is best described as "Neal Pearson's character from Drop the Dead Donkey, only more so," perhaps "dedicated" isn't the right word…

I have been known to run the odd convention (and the downright peculiar convention as well, come to think of it). If you want to know more about where and when conventions happen, go and look at The Magician's SF Convention listings page, or look at the latest issue of Ansible. It's well worth mentioning at this point media cons and mainstream cons are very different; the joy of HTML is that I can do so on another page.

I also do a fair amount of roleplaying using a wide variety of systems. I'm currently running an In Nomine game, and if you're interested I've started writing up the session logs for my amusement (and to supplement my appalling memory). I'm still writing them up if you're not interested, by the way. I've also run RPG conventions in the past and present, and if you want to know more about those I recommend a good peer at Phil Masters' UK RPG Convention Calendar.

Last but by no means least, I sing and play (piano, guitar, various recorders, recently taken up harp, and let's just not mention the violin shall we?). These days I mostly just sing in the church (where I sing tenor, despite actually being a baritone or countertenor) or filk at conventions. If you want an explanation of that last, follow the link! I have written my fair share of filks over the years, and have even begun writing a few pieces for my local church choir!

For the terminally sad, my CV is lurking around. Now you do know who I work for. Don't let it go to your head. There is also a page of nominally useful (but not updated for eons) links to other sites that I find interesting. Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited by natural law. Etc.

These web pages were produced entirely on an Acorn RiscPC 600 under RISC OS 3.7 and a Kinetic RiscPC under RISC OS 4, except for the photo of me. I don't have Acorn drivers for my camera, so that was read and trimmed up under Windows '95. Otherwise, everything is hand-crafted HTML (using !Zap's HoTMeaL mode), so it will work on anything, unlike some pages I could mention!
